Selling Durham on the Front Lines
REALTORS®, Home Builders Associations Are Vital Messenger Groups to
Newcomers
Beyond the undercurrent of negativity about Durham within a
50-mile radius, the community continues to garner consistently high rankings,
the latest being #15 in Bert Sperling’s Cities Ranked
and Rated and the #3 small metropolitan statistical area for
relocating families by Worldwide
ERC®/Primacy Relocation Services.
Although DCVB is the primary organization marketing
Durham to non-residents, there are many additional organizations on the front
lines each day welcoming visitors and newcomers. Among these messenger groups
selling Durham every day, the Durham
Regional Association of REALTORS® and the Home Builders Association of Durham, Orange
& Chatham Counties stand out in particular for their role in
residential relocation to Durham.
Founded in 1922, the Durham Regional Association of
REALTORS®, headed by Sheila Willis, represents approximately 1,000 real
estate professionals throughout Durham and the region. Both the association
and Durham were recently designated as 2007 Ambassador Cities by the National Association of REALTORS® and
the United States Conference of Mayors,
one of only six communities nationwide to receive the designation.
The Home Builders Association of Durham, Orange & Chatham
Counties, headed by former Mayor Nick Tennyson, began in 1962 and represents
more than 725 builders, allied tradesmen, suppliers, and others involved in
residential construction. In 2006, the innovative group organized the Green
Building Home Tour as part of the National
Association of Home Builders’ Green Building Initiative—the
first home builders association in the nation to do so. The recent 2007 Green
Building Home Tour featured 19 homes with environmentally-friendly features.
The Home Builders Association is also helping Durham Public Schools provide display units
to home builders.
