Pride in Durham Remains Resilient

Most Able to Separate Sense of Community from Recent Events and Media Frenzy

Resident pride in Durham is remarkably resilient through the events of the past year. The annual scientific survey reveals that residents are proud or very proud of the community by 5.3 to 1 over those who aren’t. This is up from 4 to 1 in 2001 and a low of 3 to 1 in 1999, but below the high of 6 to 1 in 1996.

As expected, like last year, nearly 30% remained uncertain but experts expect this to drop back soon to a historical average in the single digits. But the majority of residents are clearly able to compartmentalize pride in community from the actions of individuals or groups.

Few communities have weathered a media frenzy like Durham has and still retain a sense of pride. And a stubborn percentage of residents, often called the curmudgeon factor are negative about many things.

Compared to the norm for communities Durham has always had a high degree of pride. And pride in Durham is solid. For example, the percentage of residents who are “very” proud of Durham is six times the number feeling the opposite.

Also telling, in other surveys, when asked what there is to do here, Durham residents are far more able to respond with specifics as compared to norm for other communities.
