Former Mayor Wib Gulley and neighborhood activist Newman Aguiar have been appointed to the Tourism Development Authority, DCVB’s publicly appointed governing board. Gulley fills a seat for transportation and retail organizations and Aguiar the seat for neighborhoods.
Gulley, a two-term Mayor of Durham and six-term State Senator, is General Council for the Triangle Transit Authority. Aguiar owns his own IT consulting company and is active representing neighborhoods on organizations as diverse as Partners Against Crime, Trinity Park and the Durham Roundtable. He replaces West Village developer Tom Niemann, who owns Niemann Capital. Gulley replaces James Heyward of Madd Maxx Records.
Other members of the Authority include E’Vonne Coleman-Cook, Cora Cole-McFadden, Brian Lawson, Becky Heron, Ron Hunter, Ken Lile, John Mallard, Mary Simpson and Jim Wagner. The Tourism Development Authority is appointed as a provision to State legislation by interlocal agreement between the City and County.
Half of the Authority is appointed by the City Council. Along with Gulley and Aguiar, half of the Authority is appointed by the Board of County Commissioners. One member is appointed by the Joint City Council-BOCC Committee.
