Student Achievement Comparative Update for 2007 Disaggregated Scores Create Valid Comparison
Because communities differ widely in makeup, the only valid comparison is disaggregated by ethnicity. More importantly, the disaggregation brings focus to closing achievement gaps, a state and national priority. Some groups in Durham lead all cohorts while others are in the top third. But in some areas, Durham is last suggesting further disaggregation by household income and education.
Public school performance is one of several key factors as newcomers identify the best community for their particular needs and lifestyle. For years, invalid comparisons have fueled water-cooler exaggerations and led to inconsistent news reports perpetuated by relocation publications and ill-informed real estate agents. Newcomers are caught in a blaze of sensational internet headlines, virtually making it impossible for a newcomer family to make a decision that is best for them.
The comparative is assembled by DCVB for the 15-organization Durham Public Information & Communications Council. For additional copies of the comparative or instructions on how to link it to relocation information, contact research@durham-cvb.com.
