Durham is the South's Tastiest Town

Durham IS The South's
Tastiest Town

In January, 2013 Durham and its food scene were again catapulted into the national spotlight by inclusion on Southern Living magazine’s list of the Top 10 Tastiest Towns in the South. It shared company with culinary mega-star destinations like New Orleans, Charleston, and Miami. There was then a six-week online voting process to determine which place deserved the title of “Tastiest Town in the South.”

Toward the end a spirited and friendly battle emerged between Durham and the nearest competitor on the list, Memphis. At three times the size of Durham, the odds were in Memphis’ favor, but Durham did what Durham does…stayed true to its convictions and reigned victorious. In April, Durham was announced as having won the title “Tastiest Town in the South” and was featured in the May edition of Southern Living magazine.

In the article, Southern Living recognized that Durham’s creativity, accessibility, and passion positions its food scene among the best. The article commends its “elevated casual fare” and abundance of “artisans committed to crafting their own to-die-for takes on simple culinary delights.” (Read the full article)

Durham’s dining scene was making waves well before winning the “Tastiest” title. In fact, of Durham’s 700+ restaurants, more than 50 have been recognized by regional or national media, many of them repeatedly. "Sound Vision: Contemporary Art from the Collection" Art Exhibit

Since the turn of the 20th century, artists have appropriated imagery from well-known works of art, commodities and the media in order to make a statement about art’s relationship to, and place within, our world. The artists included in this installation use appropriation in their own way and for their own purposes, addressing themes of identity, politics, economics, history and nostalgia. Central to all of these works are questions of originality and the processes that go into making art. This installation includes works from the Nasher Museum’s collection by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Alice Wagner, Vik Muniz, Alexander Kosolapov and others. Admission $5, $4 seniors, $3 non-Duke students with student ID.
