The Research Triangle Park
In 1959, North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park was no more than a gleam in Governor Luther Hodges’ eyes and acres of vacant pinelands in southeast Durham. Today, it is one of the largest research and technology parks in the world. RTP is owned and operated by The Research Triangle Foundation in a “special Durham County research and production district.” It is currently home to more than 170 companies employing 38,000.
The name “Research Triangle” comes from the Park's proximity and affiliation with the state’s three premier research universities: Duke University in Durham, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University in Raleigh. The three universities—and similarly their three host cities—conjoin into three points of a triangle, with RTP located at the heart on a 7000-acre plot, with nearly 5000 acres in southeast Durham.
