Photography as a Second Language

This class is designed to teach basic photography skills to new or non-photographers, especially documentarians in other mediums who feel that photography can add depth to their projects. The course will start by surveying how photography works, choosing a camera, understanding the differences between film and digital, and how to take control of "smart" cameras. We will study the basics of exposure, shutter speed, composition, and other core principals, as well as cover the basics of post-production, editing, sequencing, and artist's statements. Students will learn the tools and tricks of harnessing photography for storytelling via assignments that challenge them to produce works of photographic problem-solving. They will then present and critique one another's work, with a short photo story as a final project. (16 hours/All levels)
