NCCU was the first publically funded African-American liberal arts college in the country, and the school continues that legacy today with one of the state’s leading collections of art that engages with African-American culture and the black experience.

The permanent collection, housed in the Carol G. Belk Gallery, includes work from the 19th and 20th centuries, including pieces by Henry Ossawa Tanner, Jacob Lawrence, and two recipients of the MacArthur grant, Robert Blackburn and Kerry James Marshall. Five special exhibits come through each year and include other notable and historic artwork, as well as annual showcases of art created by NCCU and Durham Public Schools students. The museum also augments its shows with educational programming.
