Things to Do

No matter how you like to spend your time, Durham has ways for you to engage your passion. With many museums, art galleries, shopping districts, outdoor recreation areas, and more, Durham is where travelers rarely suffer a dull moment.

With a diverse and enlightened population like Durham's, the art and culture scene never disappoints. There are over a dozen theaters in Durham and a dozen more venues that routinely have live music. Durham's Manbites Dog Theater exclusively produces original, progressive, and queer theatre. Also among Durham's shining stars is DPAC, Durham Performing Arts Center, which enjoys status as consistently one of the busiest theaters in the US. With the largest stage between Washington, DC and Atlanta, DPAC can handle Broadway's most grand productions exactly as they were envisioned by their creators. A Broadway show in Durham has all the charm of a great performance and none of the big city hassle. Durham is also home to the Carolina Theatre, a historic facility that has recently undergone a multimillion dollar renovation. The annual, 10-day North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival is hosted here.

Equally inviting is Durham's visual arts presence. With dozens of galleries and museums there are opportunities to see art in all media and styles, from outsider art to work by those classically trained. In particular, Duke University's Nasher Museum of Art is a mecca for those interested in modern art. The facility also routinely hosts traveling exhibits by the masters from all points in history, like El Greco, Picasso, and Warhol. Third Fridays in Durham are social gatherings and arts events that feature work from local artists in galleries and studios like Golden Belt.

Durham has a great system of public parks, several lakes, and the Eno River State Park for those who enjoy the outdoors. As Durham County is the 17th smallest in the state, none of these are all that far from the city center. There are also many walking trails in Durham which are accessible from points all around the community, so a great recreational stroll is never too far from reach.

Check out all of the ways to make your moments in Durham as engaging as you'd like them to be. Plan to visit Durham; you're always welcome here.
