Durham's Retail Future Bright and Visitor-Ready

Shopping by Durham visitors accounts for more than $75 million in spending each year, nearly one-fifth of the $444 million spent annually in this community by visitors.

And it’s no wonder with the wealth of shopping available in Durham, from traditional malls such as Northgate to unique shopping districts like Downtown’s Brightleaf District or the Ninth Street Shopping District. Durham also supports more than a dozen antique and collectibles shops and is home to North Carolina’s only Loehmann’s, a national upscale specialty retailer (with a name that lures travelers off I-85 in search of designer clothing at a fraction of its original cost).

With the 2002 arrival of a super-regional shopping mall, The Streets at Southpoint, the retail experience in Durham grew by leaps and bounds. This 1.3-million-square-foot complex features North Carolina’s first Nordstrom and many other retailers unique to the Triangle region.

Since then, Durham has added three more major shopping centers, Patterson Place (with 300,000 square feet of retail), South Square (with 432,000 square feet of retail, Durham’s first Sam’s Club, and one of the state’s first SuperTarget stores), and The Renaissance Center at Southpoint (with 189,000 square feet of retail).
