Pet Laws & Licenses

Durham offers a variety of healthy, enjoyable experiences for pet owners.  From leisure walks in one of Durham’s dog parks, to obedience and agility classes, owners and pets alike will enjoy the pet-friendly city.

Dog or cat owners who live in Durham County must list the animal with the Durham County Tax Administrator within 30 days of bringing the animal into the county. Most veterinarians can provide information about registering pets.

Under city and county regulations, all dogs must be on leashes when off their owner’s property. Unattended outdoor tethering is also banned.

Pets - Dog Parks

Dogs must be registered with the City of Durham Parks & Recreation Department before entering the City-run dog parks.
