Local Government

Durham is unique in that it is has only one City located in a county by the same name.  Currently Durham is the 4th largest city in North Carolina, but shoehorned into the 17th (of 100) smallest county in NC.

Durham County, governed by the five member Board of County Commissioners and managed by the County Manager, is responsible for social services, public health, elections, courts, funding schools, etc.

The City of Durham, a Council-Manger former of government, governed by a seven member Council including the Mayor, and managed day to day by a City Manager, is responsible for police, fire, public works, water, solid waste, parks, etc.
