Local Government

Durham is unique in that it is has only one city located in a county of the same name. Currently, Durham is the fourth largest city in North Carolina, but it is shoehorned into the 17th (of 100) smallest county.

Durham County

Durham County, governed by the five-member board of county commissioners and managed by the county manager, is responsible for social services, public health, elections, courts, funding schools, etc.

City of Durham

The City of Durham, run in a council-manger form of government, is governed by a seven member council, including the mayor, and is managed day to day by a city manager. It is responsible for police, fire, public works, water, solid waste, parks, etc.
