Holiday dining options for Thanksgiving

The holiday season in Durham is the most wonderful time of the year for reconnecting with family, friends, and, of course, food. As the Tastiest Town in the South, Durham has a (turkey) leg up on other cities. While many restaurants across the country are closed for the holidays, there are plenty of places to go in Durham. Check out both traditional and nontraditional Thanksgiving meals from some of Durham's Celebrated Cuisine restaurants below, or click here for a complete list of open restaurants (PDF).

You'll need to order tickets in advance for many holiday dining events. But be warned, events sell out quickly (many of these events are annual traditions, so make a note to check back next year)!

A Classic Feast

• The Fairview Dining Room at the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club is hosting a traditional Thanksgiving buffet with local free range turkey, certified Angus beef, and a smorgasbord of side dishes and entrees. Tickets cost $79 for adults, $25 for children ages 6 through 12, and children under 5 years eat free.

• At The Durham Hotel, enjoy cocktail hour with oysters followed by a family-style feast starring heritage turkeys . Tickets for adults cost $65, with tickets for children under age 12 priced at $35.

• Counting House at 21c Museum Hotel offers a three-course prix fixe menu, which includes a turkey entrée, sausage and cornbread stuffing, griddled sweet potato, and cranberry . Tickets for adults and children are $52 and $30, respectively.

• For a Thanksgiving feast in a historic house, visit Four Square Restaurant. The restaurant uses seasonal, local ingredients and offers dishes such as pan-seared foie gras, curried pork tenderloin, and wild boar lasagna.

Break From Tradition

• If you're looking for an escape from the hectic pace of the holidays, visit Dain's Place, a Ninth Street pub. Dain's has daily drink specials, a varied craft beer selection, burgers, and other pub fare available on Thanksgiving.

• For those seeking acclaimed barbecue on Thanksgiving Day, stop by The Pit Authentic Barbecue from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for Southern favorites like fried okra, mac and cheese and pulled pork.

• Visit Saltbox Seafood Joint for a pre-Thanksgiving tradition, The Lobsta Roll Social. On Nov. 24 the celebrated roadside seafood shack will offer lobster rolls and lobster chowder, along with a few of its signature items. The social begins at 11:30 a.m.

• From now until the Thanksgiving holiday, you can pick up the GOBBLER from Pie Pushers, a Durham-based pizza food truck. The seasonal pie is topped with homemade gravy, roasted turkey, local chorizo stuffing, house cranberry sauce, brie, and mozzarella. Check Pie Pusher's website for the truck's schedule and location.

SOLD OUT - The Triangle Vegetarian Society hosts annual vegan Thanksgiving celebrations at Durham restaurants. This year, join the group for the largest vegan Thanksgiving dinner in the country at Parizade, a Mediterranean restaurant. Tickets for adults are $30, $8 for children ages 5 through 10, and kids under age 5 eat for free.

SOLD OUT - If you just can't wait for Thanksgiving Day, partake in a pre-Thanksgiving feast at The Parlour. Downtown Durham's creative ice cream shop is hosting a vegan pop-up dinner Nov. 18. The dinner will include dishes such as a seitan roast stuffed with butternut squash, wrapped in vegan bacon, and baked inside a puff pastry shell. While ice cream is not included, you can purchase a scoop or two of vegan ice cream for dessert. Tickets are "pay what you want," but The Parlour suggests a $10 to $20 contribution.

Bring Home the Goods

• This year, you can order a free range or heritage breed turkey from Rose's Meat Market & Sweet Shop. Durham's joint pastry and butcher shop also offers holiday hams and roasts, in addition to a selection of desserts for special order.

• If you're hosting Thanksgiving dinner at home but need some help in the kitchen, order everything from hor d'oeuvres to main courses from Foster's Market, a café and specialty food store. Orders for Thanksgiving are due by Sunday, Nov. 22.

East Durham Pie Company will deliver handmade-to-order Thanksgiving pies right to your front door. For any location within five miles of East Durham, the delivery fee is $5. Visit the company's website to find out how you can order an apple ginger or bourbon honey pecan pie for the holidays.

• Folks cooking at home can lighten the load by pre-ordering dessert from Scratch. There are more than 20 pies, tarts, and cakes to choose from on their Thanksgiving special order menu. The bakery's mocha almond tart and banana caramel cake are a great way to end a meal.

• Pre-order cranberry-orange rolls or a chocolate pecan tart from Guglhupf, Durham's European-inspired bakery and cafe.

• Loaf in Downtown Durham offers a selection of pies for the Thanksgiving holiday, including apple streusel, pumpkin, and raspberry chess.

• For a unique dessert option, pre-order an ice cream pie from The Parlour. Your family can enjoy holiday flavors like sweet potato or apple butter ice cream.
