The Sounds of Change Youth Project will hold a spoken word workshop for LGBTQ youth ages of 15-19. The workshop connects LGBTQ youth with others through writing and performing spoken word poetry that draws on their personal experiences. A spoken word community event on Friday, August 3 features spoken word poetry by LGBTQ youth, guest speaker Samuel Peterson, and a panel discussion with local artists on LGBTQ prejudice and how they cope with the bias that comes their way. Sounds of Change Program Administrator Les Webster says the youth workshop is a first for Durham “because it promotes the exchange of ideas between LGBTQ youth, performance artists, LGBTQ organizations, and supportive individuals in the community”. The Sounds of Change Youth Workshop is co-presented by the Sounds of Change Youth Project, the LGBTQ Center of Durham, and the youth organization iNSIDEoUT.
