Following 12 hours mandatory training, Best Buddies provide respite care, friendly visits, occasional home-cooked meals, and many other supportive services on a one-on-one basis with an assigned family and patient in the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant unit. Minimum commitment of 4+ hours per week for a year. Rainbow Volunteers work with patients in the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant unit. Volunteers are based out of the Connection Playroom, which is the only common gathering space that patients and families share, and where daily group activities take place. Volunteers participate in a mandatory eight hour training prior to serving on the PBMT unit. Following training, Rainbow Volunteers provide respite for parents, play with all of the children, plan birthday parties and other activities and provide general unit hospitality for PBMT patients and families. Rainbow Volunteers serve two hour shifts, once a week for one year.
